{"id":2202,"date":"2010-10-02T19:12:21","date_gmt":"2010-10-02T23:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=2202"},"modified":"2011-07-20T17:41:01","modified_gmt":"2011-07-20T21:41:01","slug":"what-is-all-this-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=2202","title":{"rendered":"What Is All This About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a result of a process initiated by Ontario&#8217;s Ministry of Natural Resources, there has been a <a href=\"http:\/\/balafalls.ca\" target=\"_blank\">proposal<\/a> to build a hydro-electric generating station at the north Bala falls.<\/p>\n<p>While we all agree that water power is an excellent source of energy for generating electricity, the proposal would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make hundreds of feet of the only public shoreline in the area too  dangerous for existing recreational activities, this would be a <strong>terrible loss to locals and visitors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Locate the power station&#8217;s 50&#8242;-deep, 40&#8242;-wide water intake just downstream from the town docks, this would <strong>create a huge danger<\/strong> to all users of the town docks, as well as the recreational activities upstream.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the falls to a trickle year-round, which would destroy what makes Bala unique.<\/li>\n<li>Require a 33&#8242;-wide, 128&#8242;-long poured-concrete building which would rise <strong>20&#8242; above the Moon River<\/strong>, and this would be right at the falls, directly in the line of sight from where most people view the falls. And the proponent <strong>refuses to provide a rendering<\/strong> of the structure <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/renderingmark-up20091019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">showing the required components<\/a> such as the facility&#8217;s entrance door or exhaust fan openings.<\/li>\n<li>Negatively affect tourism and therefore the local economy, yet the proponent has not seriously investigated this. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/savethebalafalls-esr-technical-response-20091127.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">detailed our concerns<\/a>, yet in response the proponent only repeats the evasive information in their <a href=\"http:\/\/balafalls.ca\/esrgood.html\" target=\"_blank\">environmental screening report<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a result of a process initiated by Ontario&#8217;s Ministry of Natural Resources, there has been a proposal to build a hydro-electric generating station at the north Bala falls.
