{"id":4983,"date":"2014-07-21T10:25:53","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=4983"},"modified":"2014-07-21T10:37:58","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T14:37:58","slug":"the-response-to-our-open-letter-to-premier-wynne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=4983","title":{"rendered":"The response to our Open Letter to Premier Wynne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As detailed in our <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=4653\" target=\"_blank\">article here<\/a>, we have many specific, often technical, concerns, and the province&#8217;s responses have not actually answered the questions.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The local volunteer fire department has not been contacted to know what budget, training, or equipment they may need to handle emergencies. The province simply says call 911, as if magically skilled people will respond. Of course, in Toronto, such resources are available, but not in Muskoka.<\/li>\n<li>The province states that the proposed generating station would occupy a similar footprint as the Bala #2 generating station that used to be on the site, when in fact the proposed generating station would have a footprint 25 times that of the Bala #2 generating station.<\/li>\n<li>The province states that marine navigation would not be affected. But Transport Canada has not evaluated the downstream conditions and have not provided their final assessment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We detailed this concerns in this <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Open-Letter-to-Premier-Wynne-concerning-the-proposed-Bala-Falls-generating-station,-20140406.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Open Letter to Premier Wynne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As shown below, the province&#8217;s reply is that <em>&#8220;It is regrettable that you found previous correspondence unsatisfactory&#8221;<\/em>. They simply don&#8217;t have an answer to the solid concerns we have stated.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\">MNR5385MC-2014-937<\/div>\n<div>June 20, 2014<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Mr. Mitchell Shnier<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.SaveTheBalaFalls.com\"><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">www.SaveTheBalaFalls.com<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><a href=\"mailto:Mitchell@Shnier.com\"><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mitchell@shnier.com<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Dear Mr. Shnier:<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Premier Kathleen Wynne shared with the Honourable David Orazietti, Minister of Natural Resources, your letter regarding the proposed hydro-electric project in Bala.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>It is regrettable that you found previous correspondence unsatisfactory.\u00a0 The Minister of the Environment has confirmed that Swift River Energy Ltd., the proponent of the waterpower project, completed the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project and could proceed with the project, subject to other permits and approvals.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an approval under the <i>Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act<\/i> (LRIA) for the location of the facility on a 0.07 hectare Crown land site.
