{"id":8970,"date":"2018-08-06T19:19:18","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T23:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8970"},"modified":"2018-08-06T19:19:18","modified_gmt":"2018-08-06T23:19:18","slug":"e-newsletter-august-6-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8970","title":{"rendered":"e-Newsletter, August 6, 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proposed project to build a hydro-electric generating station at the Bala falls\u00a0is a <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>disgusting relic<\/strong> of the previous Liberal government&#8217;s failed energy policies<\/a>, some reasons why are\u00a0(click on the underlined links for more detail) &#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have found that the only six donations Tony Zwig has made to the Ontario Liberal Party in the past 13 years were while he had three well-connected lobbyists hired to help him get the final environmental approval he desperately needed. These <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>&#8220;donations&#8221;<\/strong> were made over a 14-month period<\/a> ending in November 2012 and provided Zwig direct access to then-Premier Kathleen Wynne. Zwig\u00a0received this approval exactly two months later. This is a classic example of a secret back-room deal, as\u00a0Zwig got the approval he paid for.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proponent reneged<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> on their commitment<\/a>\u00a0last month that they would\u00a0show whether\u00a0people\u00a0in front of their own docks on the Moon River would be safe from the treacherously-turbulent water the\u00a0proposed project would create.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We met with Township of Muskoka Lakes\u00a0Mayor Don Furniss and are disappointed he\u00a0is blindly supporting the proponent&#8217;s dangerous proposed project, rather than ensuring the public is informed now whether it would continue to be safe\u00a0to use\u00a0the Township&#8217;s municipal docks.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We have found that the proponent has\u00a0recently hired three lobbyists\u00a0to scare Premier Doug Ford, his Ministers, and his newly-hired government political staffers into believing the government could be successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>sued for $100M<\/strong> if the proposed Bala project was stopped<\/a>. We have found that Zwig\u00a0often initiates, threatens, and\u00a0participates in <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuits for intimidation \u2013 but then <strong>doesn&#8217;t actually do anything<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It takes clean government to make clean\u00a0energy projects. But instead we have a private developer using well-paid lobbyists to\u00a0threaten and\u00a0intimidate the government. The proposed project in Bala\u00a0is a stinking rotten left-over from the previous Liberal&#8217;s bad governance. If this dangerous proposed project isn&#8217;t stopped, Ontario taxpayers will be required to pay this private developer a $100M subsidy over the next 40 years. Bad projects such as this are why Ontario&#8217;s electricity rates are so high that they\u00a0need to be subsidized by taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>We have found that the proponent continues\u00a0to try keeping their back-room deals with the government secret\u00a0as they now have a <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>team of lawyers<\/strong> attempting to prevent the government from releasing documents<\/a> to us which we have requested through the Freedom of Information process.<\/p>\n<p>We are in a race against time with the proponent and we are working hard to help the government keep <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Ford&#8217;s promise to Bala residents<\/a>. We know that the proponent is working as fast as they can to to increase the costs for which they hope to be compensated.
