{"id":9057,"date":"2018-09-27T10:43:22","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T14:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9057"},"modified":"2018-09-30T13:44:58","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T17:44:58","slug":"why-wont-premier-ford-save-ontarians-70000000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9057","title":{"rendered":"Why won&#8217;t Premier Ford save Ontarians $70,000,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an article in <a href=\"https:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/opinion\/ontarios-balance-sheet-keeps-me-up-at-night-heres-what-our-province-is-doing-about-it#comments-area\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">today&#8217;s National Post<\/a> (local copy <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Ontario\u2019sBalanceSheetKeepsMeUpAtNight,NationalPost,TreasuryBoard,20180927.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>), the\u00a0president of the Treasury Board for the Government of Ontario notes that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ontario&#8217;s debt is currently $338 billion dollars, the highest non-country debt in the world.<\/li>\n<li>This debt requires interest payments of <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/how-crushing-is-ontarios-312-billion-debt-really\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than $12 billion dollars each year<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 this is the fourth-largest item in Ontario&#8217;s provincial budget, and is more than the cost of Ontario&#8217;s entire justice system and the taxes from fuel combined. If this debt was eliminated, Ontario&#8217;s education budget could be increased by 50%.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly, Ontario&#8217;s debt is costing us dearly.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Ontario&#8217;s Treasury Board\u00a0 is doing what it can, for example, by saving $8,000 per year by cancelling their office land-line telephones (as they all have cell phones).<\/p>\n<p>So why won&#8217;t Premier Ford do what he can, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saving at least $70 million dollars<\/a> by stopping the proposed hydro-electric generating station at the Bala falls, as he <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=8980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promised he would<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an article in today&#8217;s National Post (local copy here), the\u00a0president of the Treasury Board for the Government of Ontario notes that: Ontario&#8217;s debt is currently $338 billion dollars, the highest non-country debt in the world.
