{"id":9097,"date":"2018-11-12T13:57:10","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T18:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9097"},"modified":"2018-11-12T14:14:09","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T19:14:09","slug":"ford-government-still-has-not-addressed-the-problem-of-unnecessarily-high-electricity-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9097","title":{"rendered":"Ford government still has not addressed the problem of unnecessarily high electricity prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past months the Ford government has taken two good steps to avoid future electricity price increases in Ontario, by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/758-renewable-energy-cancelled-1.4746293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cancelling 758 proposed renewable energy projects<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-green-energy-act-scrapped-1.4831927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cancelling the Green Energy Act.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This ensures that the government will not make new commitments for unneeded high-priced power.<\/p>\n<p>But as we all know,\u00a0Ontario&#8217;s electricity prices are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-hydro-fraser-institute-study-1.4212668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already too high<\/a>, and experts have advised that the government can and should take further action.<\/p>\n<p>For example, this <a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/lau-ford-needs-to-target-high-electricity-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto Sun article<\/a> (local copy <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/FordNeedsToTargetHighElectricityCosts,TorontoSun,Lau,20181112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) notes that the Ford government needs to continue <em>&#8220;curtailing the damage of some of the worst Liberal policies&#8221;<\/em> and address <em>&#8220;unnecessarily high electricity costs&#8221;<\/em>. The article cites this <a href=\"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ElectricityReformInOntario,GettingPowerPricesDown,FraserInstitute,201810.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fraser Institute report<\/a>\u00a0 and reports of these cancellations that <em>&#8220;while these moves will prevent some future electricity price increases, they would not actually undo the past price increases.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Fraser Institute Report a<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">dvises the government should <\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8220;cancel funding commitments\u00a0under the FIT contracts&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> and another step would be\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8220;reducing payments to the relatively new small-scale hydroelectric plants&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Ford government has the power and justification to fulfill their election promises, we await their taking action to do so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past months the Ford government has taken two good steps to avoid future electricity price increases in Ontario, by: Cancelling 758 proposed renewable energy projects.
