{"id":9314,"date":"2020-07-10T13:52:53","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T17:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9314"},"modified":"2020-07-11T22:50:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-12T02:50:21","slug":"proponents-big-lie-11-increased-risk-of-flooding-lake-muskoka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebalafalls.com\/?p=9314","title":{"rendered":"Proponent\u2019s big lie #11: increased risk of flooding Lake Muskoka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For their environmental approval, the proponent committed that: <em>&#8220;there will be no change in hydraulics&#8221;<\/em> (see Sections 6.2.2.3 and 6.3.8.1, and Table 6.1 of their 2009 Environmental Screening\/Review report).<\/p>\n<p>However, on February 13, 2020 they placed two large steel enclosures into the Bala north channel to anchor their inadequate upstream safety boom:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The enclosure at the north side is about 4&#8242; wide x 3&#8242; high (highlighted at the red arrow below).<\/li>\n<li>The enclosure in the centre of the Bala north channel is 10&#8242; wide and more than 6&#8242; high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_20200323_112021,AnchorAtNorthSide.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4053\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_20200323_112021,AnchorAtNorthSide,780x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the photograph below, it took more than one huge concrete mixer to fill these enclosures with concrete.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_20200213_133204,PumpingConcreteIntoBalaNorthChannel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4053\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" src=\".\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_20200213_133204,PumpingConcreteIntoBalaNorthChannel,780x585.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The problem is these obstructions will reduce the flow capacity through Bala.<\/p>\n<p>That is, the risk of flooding Lake Muskoka has been increased solely for the benefit of a private developer, and contrary to the commitments the proponent made for their environmental approval.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For their environmental approval, the proponent committed that: &#8220;there will be no change in hydraulics&#8221; (see Sections 6.2.2.3 and 6.3.8.1, and Table 6.1 of their 2009 Environmental Screening\/Review report).
