We are extremely concerned that Bala’s main fame and tourist attraction will become an industrial site, with:
- Hundreds of feet of chain-link fence.
- A 75′-long by 15′-tall retaining wall facing the Moon River.
- A concrete building (with rocks piled up the side) with a concrete stairwell into it.
- A siren sounding every time the turbine starts.
- Huge bright orange safety booms in both Bala Bay and the Moon River.
The provincial government has rushed into this project. Due to poor policies, they have failed to study the effects an Industrial development at the site will have on Bala. Therefore:
A petition has been drafted to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario rescind the current provincial policies pertaining to the release of crown land for construction of new hydro generation facilities; and that members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario rescind the release of crown land at Bala Falls for use in the development of a hydro electricity generation facility pending consideration of alternates that might achieve a better balance between the best interests of the community of Bala and the needs of society.
